How to moderate replies on X

Short answer

X gives you five reply moderation tools: choosing who can reply when you post (and changing it later), hiding individual replies, muted words, muting or blocking accounts, and reporting. Use reply controls to prevent problems, hide replies to tidy a thread without escalating, mute words to protect your own notifications, and save blocking and reporting for accounts that are abusive or breaking the rules.

Key takeaways

  • Reply controls offer four options: everyone, accounts you follow, verified accounts, or only accounts you mention. You can change them after posting.
  • Hidden replies are still viewable by anyone through the hidden replies icon, so hiding tidies a thread rather than deleting anything.
  • Muted words only change what you see; they don't stop other people seeing a reply.
  • Quote posts don't inherit your reply restrictions, so a locked thread can still attract attention through quotes.

What moderation tools does X give you for replies?

X gives post authors reply controls, hidden replies, muted words, muting, blocking and reporting, and each one works at a different level.

Tool Affects Who notices Best for
Who can reply Future replies to one post Everyone sees the restriction Announcements you expect to be raided
Hide reply One reply under your post Hidden, but viewable via an icon Off-topic, spam, mild trolling
Muted words Your timeline and notifications Only you Keeping your own view usable
Mute account That account's posts in your view Only you Annoying but harmless accounts
Block That account's ability to follow and interact The account can tell Harassment, scams, impersonators
Report Sent to X for review X Rule violations

These details come from X's help center (see Sources). X changes its features fairly often, so check the help pages if a menu looks different.

How do reply controls work?

When you write a post, you choose who can reply: everyone, accounts you follow, verified accounts, or only accounts you mention.

Accounts you mention can always reply, whichever option you pick. You can change the setting later from the post's menu, even halfway through a conversation. Replies and reposts inherit the restriction, but quote posts don't. That last detail matters: if you lock replies on a controversial announcement, the conversation tends to move to quote posts, where you have less control.

Use restricted replies for posts where you already know the replies will be bad, such as policy changes, price increases or anything touching a news story. For routine posts, leave replies open and moderate after the fact.

When should I hide a reply instead of blocking?

Hide a reply when it shouldn't sit under your post but the account isn't worth a confrontation: spam, off-topic promotion, mild trolling.

Only the original post's author can hide replies. The hidden reply doesn't vanish. X puts a hidden replies icon on the post, and anyone can open it. The reply's author isn't notified. This makes hiding a low-drama option: the thread reads cleanly, nothing is deleted, and you haven't escalated anything.

For a busy thread, copy the replies into the spam scorer to find the ones worth hiding quickly. Duplicate copy-paste replies show up at the top of the results.

What do muted words actually do?

Muted words hide posts containing a word or hashtag from your own Home timeline, your notifications, or both.

You can mute for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days or forever, and for notifications you can mute from everyone or only from accounts you don't follow. Muting doesn't remove anything for anyone else. It protects your own attention, which is useful when a support account is being flooded with the same complaint or slur and the team needs to see the real messages. Our muted words guide covers what to put on the list.

When is blocking or reporting right?

Block accounts that harass, scam or impersonate; report anything that breaks X's rules so the platform can act beyond your own account.

Blocking stops an account from following you and interacting with your posts. X has changed exactly what a blocked account can still see more than once, so check the current help page if visibility matters to you. Reporting is the only option that can lead to action against an account for everyone. For impersonation of your brand, threats or doxxing, report first and block second, and screenshot the posts before you do either.

What does a simple reply moderation routine look like?

Check replies at set times, hide spam, answer real questions, escalate abuse, and write down every decision you'll want to repeat.

  1. Twice a day, or hourly during a launch, read new replies to your recent posts.
  2. Hide spam and promotion. Report scams and impersonation.
  3. Reply to genuine questions and complaints, even angry ones.
  4. When a new spam phrase appears more than twice, add it to your muted words and your rule set.
  5. Once a month, review what you hid and blocked. If one rule keeps catching good replies, change it.

Checklist

  • Reply settings chosen for any sensitive post before it goes out
  • Muted words list reviewed this month
  • Someone named to handle replies during launches and outages
  • Screenshots taken before reporting serious abuse
  • A public moderation policy linked from your profile or site

Common questions

Does the person know when I hide their reply?

X says the reply's author isn't notified. Anyone, including them, can still find it through the hidden replies icon on your post.

Can I limit replies on a post that's already getting attacked?

Yes. Open the post's menu and choose the option to change who can reply. The new setting applies from then on; existing replies stay unless you hide them.

Should a brand account block people?

Sparingly. Blocking someone for criticism tends to become its own story. Block spam, scams, impersonators and genuine abuse; answer or ignore everything else.
